What is Oz Homestead?
When I left the suburbs of Northern Virginia for the country in 2016, I began like many new homesteaders do, I built a simple coop, raised some chicks from tractor supply and enjoyed my very own eggs. I worked in law enforcement and recently left the Marines at the time. This little homesteading journey was new and exciting. Gardening and tending to my small flock of 10 birds helped me ease the stress of such a rough career field. I eventually left law enforcement for consulting and met my beautiful wife, Chelsea in 2020. Together we grew our homesteading hobby together. The 2020-2022 pandemic saw increased stress on the supply chain. We watched as the local supermarkets ran low on poultry and other meat. We decided to raise own own meat birds on our little two acre homestead. Once we harvested and enjoyed the final product, we were hooked.
In 2023, we moved to a 21 acre property in Goldvein, Virginia. The land we purchased was part of a larger dairy and pork farm prior to the war between the states. Upon the end of the conflict, the land was divided and sold to sharecroppers who’s children later moved into the city. Generations later, the land was sold to my wife and I. Now overgrown with thick woods and little land for raising animals, we are working hard to restore this homestead to the farm it used to be. Clearing land using pigs to root up the soil and clear the underbrush, we are getting ever closer to our dream of a productive farm.
I started Oz Homestead LLC to share the top quality pasture-raised poultry and pork with our community. I feel compelled to push forward and meet my goals for a successful farm. In the late spring and summer, we sell our poultry and pork at the Archwood Green Barns Farmer’s Market in The Plains, VA. Chelsea has been an incredible help and supportive partner in this endeavor. We have met some amazing customers and truly feel blessed to have their support. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our story and products.
